Are We In A El Nino Or La Nina Year 2024. During the spring and summer of 2024, the el nino region in the pacific cooled and the trend forecast for more cooling has noaa calling for a 74% chance of la nina. El niño tends to create hostile upper level winds that rip storms apart while la niña does the opposite.

We don’t yet have a clear picture of how global warming may affect enso in general, or the development of la niña this year in specific. It seems there isn’t symmetry between the 2 phases.
